Right across Highway 278 from Hilton Head Plantation, Indigo Run’s approximately 1,780 acres lie only two miles from the beaches.  Possibly the final plantation community to be added on Hilton Head Island, it has been in development since the mid-90s.  Indigo Run is a private golf and residential neighborhood bordering Broad Creek’s marshes, and should hold approximately 1,400 residences once filled.  The plantation is named for the area’s once-primary crop, indigo, which was developed by botanist/plantation wife Eliza Lucas—later known as Eliza Pickney.

   Indigo Run’s recreation center is named Sunningdale Park and contains a junior Olympic-sized swimming pool, walking trails, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and a playground.  Ownership in the community allows access to all privileges including the park and the Golden Bear golf course.

   Two premier golf courses have been developed here in the recent past; the Golden Bear course in 1993 and the Golf Club at Indigo Run in 1996.  The first was designed by Jack Nicklaus' company, Golden Bear Design Associates, and contains a clubhouse, golf shop, and grille.  The second, the Golf Club, is a members-only private course—where property owners may or may not opt for membership—also with a clubhouse and other recreational activities.  385 residents may enjoy membership at this course.
